LASU Students Go On Rampage, Block Vehicular Movement

It seem the last has not heard of the crisis

rocking Lagos State University (LASU) as

students yesterday June 9 took over Badagry

and Iba expressways blocking vehicular

movement, The Sun reports.

This current protest is coming of heel of the

contention between the institution's

management and staff unions as the 48-hour

ultimatum issued by the student expired..

The student union mouthpiece, Adebanjo Fatai,

stated thet decision to of the student to take

to the street was taken after a meeting held

yesterday morning.

The protest brought to halt commercial

activities around the area and the campus. It

also caused heavy traffic leading to

commuters to disembark and continue their

journeys on foot.

The police deployed 11 police vans and

armoured personnel carrier and stationed it

at the Badagry Expressway gate of LASU to

prevent the situation from turning violent.

The protesting students started the protest at

about 10.55am and was peaceful. However

commuters and motorists were forced to wait

in the long queue that extended up to Agric

Bus Stop towards Mile 11 and the Iyana Sasi

end of Badagry.

The students, led by their President, Adeyemi

Onikoro, used articulated trucks to block the

Badagry Expressway. Pleads by the area

commander fell on deaf ears as the angry

students continue with their protest.

Some of the protesting students turned the

Badagry Expressway into a football pitch, while

others chanted anti-Lagos State songs.

Onikoro stated that the students wanted

Governor Akinwunmi Amobode to intervene in

the crisis rocking the school following the

sudden postponement of the 2nd semester

examinations by the management of the

institution and seven-month-old crisis between

the staff unions and the management

The students' union Fatai spokesman said the

protest was a warning to Governor Ambode to

address the issues in contention.

" We have written about seven letters to the

governor on these issues without positive

result. We are using this blockade to send a

signal to Ambode. We cannot tell what will

happen tomorrow, we will go back and re-

strategize on the next line of action. The

governor must attend to the demands. We

used this protest to let people know what we

are going through in LASU, '' Fatai warned

It will be recalled that the students' union had

at press briefing in Ikeja issued a 48-hour

ultimatum to the institution management to

revert the postponement of examination .
